Sony Xperia Play: the gaming smartphone
In recent years the idea that Sony was preparing to launch a phone based on the famous portable PSP console has circulated. Until now everything sounds interesting. The only problem was that no such phone appeared. This is why in August, when we heard new rumors of a PSP phone we did not take them seriously. However it seems this year the idea of a PSP has great chances to become reality, with the rumored name being Sony Xperia Play.
On the internet a series of information and even a photo of a gadget that combines a portable console with a phone have appeared. Even if many expected it to be a Sony phone in the lower part of the picture we can clearly see the Sony Ericsson logo. This means that the phone part of the so called PSP Phone/Xperia Play will be borrowed from Sony Ericsson, and as many details as possible will also be taken from the original PSP console in order to ensure the best possible gaming quality.

Sony Xperia Play
The device will most certainly be based on the Android 3.0 operating system also known as Gingerbread. It will work with the help of a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and a memory composed out of 512MB of RAM and 1GB of ROM. I would say that the big touchscreen is probably at least 4 inch if not even bigger. At least this is the impression I get from the picture we have seen. An important aspect is also represented by the graphics chipset which should theoretically have advanced 3D processing capabilities to be able to play games just as well as the original PSP console.
The other specs will be similar to those of recent smartphones. This is why we cannot expect top notch hardware. Applications will be provided through the online Sony MarketPlace shop. If we are talking about software I must say that there are rumors about a few of the titles that will be available on the PSP phone: God of War, Call of Duty or Little Big Planet.
Conclusions
More information will be available once the company makes the official presentation of the phone. Since no official statement has been made about the PSP phone/Xperia Play till now we can only wait for the announcement in future months.
After Apple launched its first iPhone in 2007 a series of competitor phones (there is no purpose in me starting naming models now) were called “iPhone killers”. We are already at the 4th iPhone generation but I have not seen any real “Killer”. To what extent will the Sony Xperia Play (codenamed PSP Phone) be able to compete with the Apple product is something we cannot yet know.
Update: the Sony Experia Play was officially announced.
