At first I didn’t knew what that was but after a quick Google search I understood I’m looking at the first netbook from Nokia, world’s biggest phone manufacturer. I knew rumors about Nokia planning a netbook, but this is too fast, even for a fast paced industry like IT&C. So let’s see what Nokia Booklet 3G has to offer compared to the competition.

Nokia Booklet 3G specifications

10 inch HD ready screen (1366 x 768 pixels), more than other 10 inch netbook models

Atom CPU

12 hours battery life (manufacturer claim)

1.25 kilograms (2.75 lbs)

20 mm thickness

aluminum body

3G/HSDPA/WiFi, Bluetooth connectivity

HDMI video out port

SD card reader

front facing Webcam

3 x USB 2.0 ports

A-GPS, that’s a first. Comes with Ovi Maps preinstalled

Windows operating system (maybe Windows 7 Starter as in the video above, but nothing sure)

Nokia Booklet 3G looks rather nice

The reason behind Nokia’s first netbook? Well, Nokia executives say it’s the smart move: people need computing power inaccessible to smartphones and more connectivity options. I kind of agree with them, as possibility to work on the move is one of my strongest concerns lately, and you can’t do that using a phone, even a top notch mode.

First video with Nokia Booklet 3G Netbook

<object

Till then you can watch the first press pictures with the Nokia Booklet 3G, a pretty nice spec netbook with lines reminding us of Nokia’s N-Series phones.

Till then watch this video of the Nokia Booklet 3G, or buy <a

Of course, the biggest improvement is the screen, which now went from 10.1 to 11.6 inches and boasts a higher resolution: 1366 x 768 pixels, a nice upgrade to the HD world. You’ll see that the higher pixel count will <a

People love them, as they’re pretty cheap compared to a fully fledged laptop computer, they’re small enough to be carried around in a bag or a purse without noticing its weight and offer great battery live.

That's what I call nice styling

There are many variations out here but none of them is really perfect for my taste, everyone of them has something missing that I really need. Usually I don’t do that but now I think it’s time to make up a sketch of what would be the perfect netbook computer in my opinion. So let’s see what I come up with:

screen size: the difference from 10 to 12 inch is not that big in dimension but the screen area can accommodate more pixels with easy without causing eye strain, so the perfect diagonal is 12 inches for me. And not to forget it has to be a LED illuminated screen for better colors and consumption

resolution: 1366 x 786. Raising it to 1440 x 900 would not be suitable for my eyes at that dot pitch

weight: if it’s around 1.5 kilograms (3.3 pounds) I wouldn’t mind, but only if the charger is smallish, like in current ASUS EEE PC models

battery life: the more the merrier, so I would go for something like 8 hours of real life

CPU power: current Atom lineups are not enough for what I do, I prefer some Intel CULV dual core (like the one in the higher spec Acer Timeline) with at least 1.6 GHz running speed

RAM: 3 GB. More is a waste on current 32 bits operating systems, which best support current software

Hard drive: I would love a speedy 7200 RPM drive or an 128 SSD HDD but I would trade capacity for speed

touchpad: large, with multitouch support

keyboard:Â like the ASUS EEE Shell models, maybe with illuminated keys

connectivity:Â WiFi, Bluetooh and 3G card

EEE PC. What’s not to like about a computer touted to cost 200$ and do basic office stuff, browsing and multimedia? The “crazy idea” caught up people’s attention and in less than a year every big notebook brand has it’s own netbook in their own product lineup.

Last winter holidays netbooks sales skyrocketed (on Amazon.com 17 of 25 bestseller notebooks were sub 500$ netbooks). Everything seems good but I think I’ve spotted where all this thing is going.

But first let’s remember the times where 12 inch notebooks were called ultra-portables and were about 2000$ at least. That’s a lot for a less powerful computer with less features, smallish screen and cramped keyboard.

Netbooks will go slowly towards bigger screens: 12-13 inch and will add up performance, but not too much as they will trail regular laptops in performance figures. What makes me say that netbooks will transition towards bigger screens? Well, size matters, smaller it better in laptops but to a point where it’s hard to see fully fledged websites without horizontal and vertical scroll.

Also typing on a small keyboard is no joy, even if you put a high price on portability. That’s why netbooks will retain their 1-1.5 kilograms weight but in a slimmer package thanks to bigger screens. I’m pretty sure that in the next 12-18 months we’ll see netbooks as half size/half price notebooks.

<div
