On of the advantages of working in the IT Press, even remotely, is that you get to test the latest gadgets and be the one that tells friends what to buy, not the one that asks. This week we’ve received at the office the 5800 XpressMusic, the first serious touchscreen phone from Nokia.

I don’t want to write a preview, but just to make a short list of the ups and downs I’ve found for the Nokia Tube, as it was called before any official announcement, when was seen in the Dark Knight movie.

Pros

Nice interface, intuitive, 95% of buttons are easy to press with finger, no need for the included stylus
Fast for a touchscreen smartphone. It seems faster if you made the switch from Windows Mobile
Nice audio quality and you can use your own headset
Included web browser supports flash
Various input options
The included 8 GB microSD card will make you forget the need to free up space
Ours came with included music files, around 300 MB

Cons

A little big on the bulky side
Not much software applications at this time, but will surely change in the future
Way too little options for the home screen
Touchscreen not very responsive
Plasticky feel and build materials are of questionable quality

First 24 hours with EEE PC

Well, it’s not my first impression, as I’ve got a hold on it a few weeks ago, but now it’s something different, as I own one, a Galaxy Black Version, which I won at a contest. I can tell you that there is a big difference between testing and owning a product.

That’s why I’ve decided to make two lists with what I like and dislike about EEE PC, after 24 hours of use. So let’s cut to the chase:

The Good

Battery lasts about 3 hours with maximum brightness and Wi-Fi on
It feels pretty fast, at least compared to a regular laptop
Doesn’t heat up and it’s also pretty silent
It can play DivX videos directly from a memory stick without shuttering and lost frames
It’s light, managing to stay a little over one kilo with charger
Pre-installed programs cover a large base of computing needs. You don’t need anything else
You can install Windows XP on it if you have an external optical drive but you can also install it from a USB memory stick (more on that later, as I’ll write a short tutorial on how you can do that)
ASUS revised its warranty statement, allowing you to upgrade and modify it
Last, but not least, it looks great in Galaxy Black

The Ugly

Battery takes about three hours to charge
The keyboard needs some time for getting used to it. Keys are pretty cramped and some are oddly placed
Open Office couldn’t manage to open a Powerpoint PPT file. I’ve tried several times but it did not manage to import it
Screen resolution is too low. You’ll feel the constrains while browing

This is how EEE PC feels like after 24 hours. I’m definitely install Windows XP later. Check back for the tutorial later.
