I have friends that confirm this statement, but sometimes they need things installed, and as you might imagine, they call me to do it. It’s hard, as I don’t particularly like giving assistance over the phone, but now I have a solution, I can point them to Ninite.com, a website that offers an automated installer of typical software applications on a Windows computer.

Ninite doesn’t even install itself: it runs in the background and installs all the applications you’ve checked on the first step, saying No to features like toolbars, ads or MP3 player of the day, if you know what I mean. There’s only one downside: not all applications are included in the list, but for a typical user there’s more than enough programs to install.

I’ve tried it on Windows 7 and it works perfectly. Check Ninite out and tell me what you think. Below there’s a screenshot of the list of programs that you can choose from:

Nokia E52 and got to the part with price and had to mention that this was the price at the time of the writing and that it will change for sure in the future. This is OK if someone visits this page today or one week from now: the information will still be valid, but what happens if someone gets here during Christmas or Black Friday and see the 400 $ price tag? That person might make a mistake assuming the phone is too expensive and will look for other cheaper models, ignoring this one.

What do you want WEB 3.0 to do for you?

Don’t tell me that I should come back from time to time and update the price. That doesn’t hold when you have a few hundred posts on your blog and it shouldn’t be a solution, at least not an optimal one. Then I got thinking about content that updates itself. Don’t confuse it with content that writes itself, but regular content with small pieces of information that are updated automatically when things change, things like price, availability or address.

I don’t know how to call those pieces of information, but I bet you’d want your store address to be updated automatically everywhere on the Internet where someone mentioned it. It’s useful for other things too, not just from businesses point of view. This is what I would like to see in WEB 3.0. Definitely.

Think that content that updates itself automatically will make older pieces of content worth reading again. Will also clean up the garbage in many search engine results. Update means in this case up to date. So, what do you want WEB 3.0 to do for you?

WordPress and Akismet is called Automattic. If that’s not important for you what’s matters most is that it acquired Gravatar, the website that hosts your picture and links it to a specific email address.

If you comment on a blog that has a Gravatar plugin, when you mention your email it will be automatically linked to the image you’ve uploaded on Gravatar.com.

Now my educated guess is that the next big WordPress version, probably 2.4, will incorporate gravatars by default. That’s not nearly as impressive as Tags, the biggest addition to WordPress 2.3 but it might be a good step in the socialization direction, bringing commenters closer to blog owners.

<div
