Yahoo’s new homepage: more redesign than novelty

Tags: ,   Categories: Internet

If you follow the news about online big brands you already know that Yahoo changed its homepage once again. Everyone can try it, it’s not beta anymore. As my first email account had an @yahoo.com ending I felt obliged to go there and take a look at the new homepage. From design point of view I like it, it cleaner, with less advertisements, you can choose a color scheme (but the default one is by far the best).

Now from functionality point of view I can say that it’s not a big deal, it’s not something new and definitely if that’s the answer of Yahoo to its problems I can see more problems for them in the near future.

But let’s see what’s not to like about Yahoo’s new homepage:

  • if you don’t live in US or you’re not very interested in the US market it’s not for you as you can’t customize to display certain informations for your region like the main headlines, the popular searches, market trends, find a car section, shopping and so on
  • you can add sites in the left menu, but you can’t put the news from them on the central column
  • poor Yahoo Mail and Gmail integration. You can’t see the number of unread messages without hovering over the left menu corresponding item plus in Gmail you only see unread messages in the list of recent emails

So, what do you think about Yahoo’s new homepage? It rocks or sucks?
