Did you knew that there are websites out there almost as powerful as Google in driving traffic to your website? I’m talking about social media websites like Facebook and MySpace that can drive immense traffic to your website, more than Google can ever do. What strikes me is that not many people take advantage of Social Media and don’t strengthen their brand there as they do by SEO/SEM and other optimizations techniques meant to drive traffic from Big G.

Gravatar logo

There are a lot of ways to promote yourself in social media websites but by far the easiest way to strengthen your personal brand online is to have consistency wherever you post or comment. That means using the same username all over, and even use the same picture for services that allows this means of identification. I find Gravatar the easiest way to promote your image as it matches your email with an image you choose and when you comment on blogs, social networking sites and such your image gets downloaded from Gravatar and matched you the email you use in comments for example.

The advantage of using Gravar is that is widely used by blogs and networking services plus you can change the picture in one place and it gets updated everywhere you left a mark. Getting an account on Gravatar is free so there’s no motive to not get one fast and start strengthening your image online.

And here’s a short video presentation of Gravatar:

Web has changed, tools have changed, habits have changed and so did marketing and the way of making business online. I can hardly remember the times when companies used to announce a new product, put some money in some banners and then promote it via classic channels. That’s old school marketing folks!

Modern product launch

Things have changed lately, as companies have started to ‘leak’ Beta versions, to give to users free of charge technological previews and release candidates (Windows 7 is one such example). Stirring a Buzz before the actual/official launch of a products is now an active part of the marketing process.

That’s a good thing because now users are involved from the development stage and companies can adjust/rethink their products before it’s too late for them. Of course, you must be careful to not stir a Buzz and then not be capable of launching the product in time, see Sony Ericsson with Xperia X1, which made everyone droll but it came too late, at about one year after the first presentation, in which time other manufacturers launched better products to market.

This is what I call making good use of the social factor that seems to drive the web right now.
