The numbers behind NFS Shift 2: Unleashed

NFS Shift 2: Unleashed will be the first of the 17 NFS games in which you will be able to drive over 100 cars. The game will include 145 cars made by 36 manufacturers from all over the world. Among the cars you will be able to drive you will find cars like the FIA GT1 and FIA GT3 from Tourism competitions.

In order for the diversity of cars to come with a multitude of playgrounds the game includes 36 circuit tracks, just enough so you do not get bored of the surroundings you play in too fast. Race fans will appreciate the inclusion of the Suzuka and Bathurst race tracks, 2 of the most globally well-known.

Features and new options

Cars and tracks are not the only elements that have multiplied with the new version of the game. One of the new features is the possibility to race during the night – finally, an Underground feature has been put to good use and it will contribute to a rich aspect of the game. In addition to this a new view mode has been introduced, from a camera mounted on the helmet. Improvements can also be seen when it comes to the maneuverability of cars and control settings for those playing on a console or with a PC joystick.

Autolog – the hub for online fun

The online component in racing games is becoming more and more important, and NFS is no exception from this. The new Shift 2: Unleashed bets on Autolog, a function that was first introduced in NFS Hot Pursuit for those who want to play on the internet.

Practically the Autolog is a social network for NFS fans, where you will be able to play races one on one and view real time statistics on the performances of your rivals.

Place in the series

Surprisingly NFS Shift 2: Unleashed is not part of the Need for Speed family. The game has probably been separated in order to attract fans of accurate simulations. Producers say the game will be a direct competitor to the Gran Turismo 5, but even with all the improvements it comes with it is hard to believe it will be more successful than GT5.

You can also get trapped easily into a scary paradox: you’re connected to everyone but you can’t physically interact with them. This is a problem modern society has to solve as boredom in teenagers was steadily replaced by lack of interaction between them.

A FPS game

Recently it stroke me one thing: most of the current PC and console games lack mirrors of any kind (except auto simulators). If you’re in a FPS game made 10 years ago or one made this year there’s no difference: you can’t watch yourself in the mirror no matter what.

I know this is not a problem with computer hardware like it was many years ago when CPU performance was not enough to render a mirror image. I believe it has something to do with the psychological part of the game: by removing the option to watch yourself in the mirror the game producer doesn’t impose a certain style and lets you imagine how you look, allowing you to define your own style, which affects the way you play the game.

Leaving less to the imagination means a more framed game where there are limited things you can do. I don’t see any other reason for this. Do you? If you’re into games a lot you can try some of the best free games around the web, free of charge, of course.

I grew up with computers from the time where Internet was just a dream in my country and had my first email account in 2000, so imagine that I used computers without Internet for a long time, so far away in my past that I almost forgot that you can do stuff with computers, not Internet related. I’ll begin with the following assumptions: you have the needed software installed and your computer is working properly (doesn’t need updates or drivers). Plus I’ll assume you have all your media files on your hard drive. It seems fair to me that a normal computer is in this state after you plug it off the network.

What a computer can do for you without connection?

• You can entertain yourself in a single player game
• Watch movies and catch up with the latest TV shows you got through Torrents (I know you do that)
• Listen to your favorite tunes
• Write articles for your blog (assuming you did your research before or don’t need research for what you’re writing) or plan a list of future articles to do
• Do some work (programming, CAM/CAD, 3D modeling and animation, Photoshop some pictures or whatever your work implies)
• Backup your data on DVDs or on an external HDD
• Organize your files like you should have done a long time ago
• Defragment your disk in order to maintain the same level of performance longer
• Check all files with your antivirus via a thorough system scan

Many of those actions can be done simultaneously, of course, because now we’re not bound by performance anymore. But wait, my internet connection is back, so enough with those meaningful tasks, I’ll upload this post now.

• when was the last time you got home after work and did not open the computer? If it’s been that long then it might be nice to do it, as computers and Internet shouldn’t be your only way of spending time.

This is why I believe the all mighty Internet alienates people. Is something I’ve experienced on myself, not a made up list. I believe now, more than ever that it’s necessary to strike a balance between your online activities and your personal life, as the future won’t be so bright when we will grow old and feel the need of physical presence of others more than we do now, so it’s up to you what to do to counterbalance this effect the Internet has on ourselves.

Set for 2010 summer launch, this title looks very promising as it is directed by Christopher Nolan (director of The Dark Knight) and features Leonardo diCaprio in main role. The trailer is very intriguing and lets very few details trespass, but maybe that’s why it makes me believe this is the best of the upcoming science fiction movies in 2009 and 2019.

Terminator is the best SF character

But let’s not loose time with the present and get to the point of this point, which is presenting you the list of the best science fiction movies that changed my life and allowed me to dream, develop my imagination and become the man I am today, as I think movies had something to do with the culture of past 30-40 years in my country. So, here’s the list of my personal best science fiction movies:

1 – Terminator 2 Judgment Day – IMDB link

What’s not to like about robots coming from future to kill John Connor, a little kid who’s only fault was to be born… oh, and that it was destined to be the leader of the human resistance in the future, the resistance to total annihilation by the aforementioned robots.

Terminator 2 I think is the only sequel that’s better than the first title. What further confirms that is Terminator 3, not so worthy, and the 2009 atrocity: Terminator Salvation. What’s even worst is that the Terminator Sarah Connor Chronicles Series last season ended a few months ago, leaving the Terminator story fans in the dust. Hope someone serious will resurrect the Terminator franchise in the future, but that’s a long shot. Buy T2 from Amazon: Blu-ray or DVD

2 – Twelve Monkeys – IMDB Link

This was not an easy to digest movie for me, as I was very young in 1995 and couldn’t understand completely the Twelve Monkeys story but I’ve seen it several times now and everything is clear for me. It’s the idea of sending someone back in time to find the what caused the worst infection that killed billions of people and try to understand how the disease had spread and how to cure it for the remaining people. I don’t want to spoil the ending for those of you who haven’t seen it but Twelve Monkeys really deserves a place in your best science fiction movies of all times. Buy from Amazon DVD or Blu-Ray

3 – Star Wars – IMDB ep 4, ep 5, ep 6

I loved the Star Wars trilogy, not the new episodes, which seem like they were conceived for children, not grownups. The old episodes were something truly fantastic, opening my eyes on a new universe, one that had meaning in every detail and clearly showed George Lucas had everything clear in his mind.

All three episodes were packed with space battles. What’s not to like about that, plus the twisted end where Luke finds out Dark Vader is his father: it can’t get better than that as an ending. Buy the trilogy from Amazon

4 – Gattaca – IMDB Link

Even if Gattaca is more of an inspirational movie, it’s a Science Fiction, so it has to get here. You cannon ignore Vincent’s determination to fly to the stars in a world where naturally conceived children were deemed for low skills jobs because their genetic material was not good enough for society’s standards. I hope we’ll never get to see a society with such rules in place. Buy from Amazon DVD or Blu-ray version

5 – The Matrix – IMDB Link

I’ve seen this movie in my first year of college and was amazed by the idea. It was in place with all the new things I’ve experienced that year (nothing illegal, I assure you) and made my philsophical side take a step forward and think of new ideas and even ways to detect if what was depicted in the movie wasn’t really happening in our reality, but no white rabbit for me to follow.

The sequels, Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions, were not even close to the first Matrix, even if the story was the same (or maybe because it was the same). Buy from Amazon DVD or the entire trilogy

6 – Aliens series – IMDB Link

This is one of the most scary SF movie series I’ve ever seen, but also one of the best as it manages to show that man’s worst enemy is himself, always willing to develop a new more powerful weapon to kill other men, but in the Aliens case the weapon is a beast that cannot be tamed or trained and it rebels against everyone. The series also features one of my favorite actresses: Sigourney Weaver. It’s definitely a must have in my best science fiction movies collection.  Buy Aliens quadrilogy from Amazon

Gattaca - the best inspirational movie

I’m not gonna tell you how the movie goes but I highly recommend you see Gattaca if you haven’t already done so. It makes you forget about how hard is life and concentrate on how to get what you want and where you want to be. Complaining has nothing in common with success. Stop searching excuses and to everything in your power to reach your goals. That’s what Gattaca inspires me to do.

Now, before I get back to other movies I leave you with 2 quotes that I will never forget from Gattaca:

1. When Vincent’s brother asked him how does it managed to beat him when swimming into the ocean – “You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back.”

So let’s see what I’m packing every day and carry with me without making big compromises for functionality:

HP 6530b business laptop

1 – The Laptop: HP 6530b

I’ve bought mine for around 1200 $ in January but now you’ll find it on Amazon for around 700 – 800 $, but be careful about the hardware specs as mine comes with a very speedy Core 2 Duo P8600 CPU running at 2.4 GHz. I’ve added 2 GB of RAM on top of the already existing 2. The 14.1 inch screen is amazing compared to other HP laptops I’ve owned plus it has a higher than usual screen resolution: 1440 x 900 pixels. I’m running now Windows 7 RC1 on it, which runs speedy enough for my taste (I can’t stand sluggish computers). Battery lasts for approximately 3 hours with WiFi on and medium brightness so that’s very acceptable.

2 – The digital camera: Panasonic DMC-LS80

It’s a small pocketable camera, with 8 megapixels and 3X optical zoom plus image stabilization. It was a bargain for 100 $ plus a 2 GB card and a carrying case. For power I user 4 x AA rechargeable batteries (two sets as the DMS-LS80 only needs 2 batteries) and a fast charger for them. Picture quality is not great, at least indoors, but the small weight is a very important factor plus batteries last above average. It’s also pretty resistant as I’ve dropped it a few times.

3 – External storage: Lacie 250 GB 2.5 inch drive

That’s one piece of industrial design marvel with a metallic case, I like the design very much, plus being a notebook drive you don’t need a separate charger, as the power is sent trough the USB cable. Now 250 GB is considered too low, but 18 months ago was pretty big. If you want an enternal drive I recommend Lacie (Check out Amazon’s Lacie external hard drives offers). I use mine for storage of multimedia files and backup of my work. It’s not my only backup.

Nokia E71 business smartphone

4 – The smartphone: Nokia E71

This is my latest aquisition (besides the BenQ 22 inch Full HD desktop montor). It’s by far the best QWERTY Nokia business phone sold today and for good reasons: it’s small, fast, has many multimedia and business features, it’s stable plus you can find any piece of software you can imagine for Symbian. And I don’t have to mention the battery that lasts 4 days of intensive use (I’ve write some blog articles on it) or 6-7 days with lighter use. You’ll have to pay around 500 $ unlocked, but I’ll bet it’s cheaper with a monthly plan. All I can say is I love it.

5 – Other small things

There are also some small stuff I carry arround with me every time like:

• pens and paper
• screwdriver
• chargers for mobile phone, bluetooth stereo headset
• microUSB and miniUSB cable
• USB sticks
• bussiness cards

And don’t even get me started on TV series, which are worse than movies, as they try to get as much episodes in the air, changing the script too many times to keep audiences at a certain level. That surely affects quality. I’m getting pretty sick of today’s movies which are bad, bad, bad, but I won’t stop hoping something will change.

Next year seems that will be a decisive one for Formula 1, as Honda announced its retirement from this sport (lack of money and results is the main problem here) and new rules about engines that now should last a few races have made things difficult for teams and pilots, that now feel this sport is not about competition anymore, but just a way to spend/earn a few bucks.

I do feel the same too, as 2009 seems to be the first year with tho teams, McLaren and Ferrari, lining up 3 cars (now every team has 2 cars) because sponsorship and television rights contracts were signed for 20 cars on the starting grid, not 18. For me that’s pure nonsense: how can the constructors title be called fair if some teams have 50% more chances to gain t, thanks to one additional car? Will they multiply the points gained by other teams by 1.5? I don’t think so.

Too bad that Formula 1 was a sport for the brave and now seems more like chess. What do you think? Where F1 will go in the next few years?

I’m a really big fan of SF movies and I always look for new ideas, that make my mind dream, but unfortunately the past years thing got nasty in Hollywood and movies become worse day by day (that or I’m getting too old for the same turnovers and happy endings you see in movies today).

That’s why I really appreciate movies by their ideas, not special effects or blockbuster characteristics (except Dark Knight this year, which was a really good movies). Time Crimes is one such extrordinary movie, that managed to pun on film a very interesting idea about time travel and its negative effects . I’m not gonna tell you more, but I highly recommend the movie. And if you’re passionate about low bugdet SF time travel movies I also recommend Primer.

I’ve just finished wathing a documentary about Albert Einstein on History Channel. I’m deeply moved by this man’s ambition and perseverance to seek the one equation that will describe in a scientific manner god’s work: the Universe.

I knew about Albert Einstein from a young age what everyone else knew back then: it was a brilliant scientist of the 20th Century, an unconventional guy with big white hair, which discovered the General Theory of Relativity, that overturned Newton’s Theory of Gravity.

Now, after 90 minutes of very insightful information and testimonials from fellow scientists I know that Einstein was a man with a goal, which he pursued most of this adult life, becoming obsessed by it. You might think that’s not worth it, to live a life with an obsession, as Einstein spent often days sitting and thinking about his theories, but the great physicist managed to have a quite intriguing love life, proving you can live a normal live along with pursuing your ambitions.

The documentary hit me in the right spot and at the right time, as my online projects (all but one actually) were not doing too well and future prospects didn’t show certainties, but only new paths to try. Now I feel focused and motivated to pursue my own little dreams. I highly recommend searching and wathing the documentary.

6. Big Brother: Surveillance systems

In short there’s always a downside for surveillance systems installed for our safety as they allow someone to access all your personal information that otherwise would not have been available.

The conclusion of this video is that western societies are marching toward a police state where citizens afraid of terrorism and terror acts are willing to trade their freedom for security, or better said the idea of security, as no protection system invented yet is invulnerable.

5. NSA is copying anything on the Internet

Do you remember the funny picture below, a message of how long it takes to download the Internet?

Well, I do and it always put a smile on my face. That ended when I saw the next video, presenting an AT&T and government initiated system to spy on the American people by duplicating any Internet transmission.

It seems like a joke but they did it, till someone from inside confessed.

4. The Facebook conspiracy

This is not proven fact but some questions asked about the information people give out when using Facebook. You may say that this kind of information is protected by the law but it seems users give up their rights when signing up for Facebook.

3. The Google Master Plan

A lot of people love Google, but also it seems that enough are not, especially the competition. The next video also asks some question and rises concern about what will happen if Google changes their motto one day from “Don’t be evil” to “Be evil”.

Some sources in the video even claim that Google works hand in hand with the US government to spy on people and build a detailed profile of everyone that uses Google’s services. That’s pretty much any person with Internet access.

2. 9/11 conspiracy

The 9/11 events are surely one of the greatest tragedy that hit USA after Pearl Harbor, but here are some voices that say that also like the event that brought America intro World War 2, it was allowed by the government to persuade people on fighting a cause.

It’s very interesting to watch as it even brings some evidence, but nothing official, yet.

1. Did we really landed on the Moon

That’s got to be the most intriguing conspiracy video, as it destroys event of Moon landing. The most important exploration achievement of all times is question in this video with hard evidence that cannon be ignored. I’ve showed this video to my mom, who witnessed Live at TV the landing and she refused to take the idea of a fake landing into consideration.

Me on the other hand, a man of science, I wonder it the US government pulled this off to win the space race with the soviets. What do you think, did we really land on the Moon?

All those conspiracy videos benefit from our human nature, one that’s curious to know the truth and always finding ways to contradict what other say it’s obvious. I hope you enjoy watching those movies as much as I enjoy writing about them.

Time has passed, but the wish list remained, even if now I’m buying the gifts. So without furthermore tattle let’s see what I want this year.

I’ll start with less inexpensive ones and then advance to more “serious” products:

A watch – Fossil Men’s Blue watch CH2490

I had a sporty Swatch which I bought a couple of years ago but the battery emptied and the screen broke after a knock out hit from a wall (I know, technically not the wall hit my watch…).

Now I’m thinking of a Fossil, because they’re relatively cheap but precise nonetheless, plus I like their mens sports watches series. The CH2490 is a perfect combination of style and spottiness. At least that’s what I believe.

Fossil CH2490‘s case is made from stainless steel and is water resistant up to 100 meters. For 146$ it’s a bargain and should suit a wide range of tastes.

A portable hard drive – Western Digital Passport 250GB (Black)

A portable hard drive always comes handy, no matter if you have a laptop or not. I prefer 2.5 inch format not only because it’s smaller than 3.5 inch, but also because it doesn’t require a power cable and adaptor, so it’s easy to carry around in your vest pocket.

Western Digital Passport not only looks astonishing in black with blue power LED, but also can be found in up to 300 GB capacities. For me the 250 GB version has the best price/capacity ratio now, that’s why I’m opting for it.

A small laptop – ASUS Eee PC 4G PC (7″, 512 MB RAM), Pearl White

Even if I have a laptop I really need something smaller, thinner which isn’t a paint in the a** to carry around. Of course I want it to be cheap, a word that doesn’t go well with ultra portable, but that was true till one month ago, when ASUS released the Eee PC, a 7 inch laptop with outdated components and a very small hard drive: only 4 GB.

This didn’t stop people to buy it till it got out of stock in many shops. Even if I would prefer the 8 GB version, with rumored 10 inch screen and black paint, I’ll probably go for the Eee PC 4G version, which currently sales for under 400 bucks, 399 $ to be precise.

A new smartphone – HTC Touch Cruise

Since I’ve owned my first smartphone, the Nokia E70, I didn’t want to go back to a regular phone. Now I have an ASUS P525, which I hope to soon replace with HTC Touch Cruise, a Windows Mobile smartphone which will hit the shelves hopefully before Christmas. I’m guessing it will cost under 600 $ (or Euros in Eastern Europe, where I live).

What makes this boy special is the Touch Flo interface made by HTC. The rest of the specs are top notch, as expected from a Q4 2007 smartphone: GPS, 128 MB RAM, 3.2 megapixels camera and Windows Mobile 6 Professional. Below there’s a small video which demonstrates Touch Flo.
